Karachi, Pakistan. Members of the Christian community gathered in Karachi to stage a peaceful protest against the issue of forced and underage marriages, expressing strong concern over recent developments and legal decisions.
The protest was led by Dr. Sultan Bhatti, with participants assembling at Gora Qabristan and marching peacefully towards the Karachi Press Club.
During the protest, Pastor Sarfraz William strongly condemned forced marriages and underage unions, stating that such practices are unacceptable and must not be legalized or supported in any form.
He highlighted the case of Maria Shehbaz, a 12-year-old girl, calling for a review of her marriage and the related court decision. The protestors demanded justice and protection for minors, urging authorities to reconsider the ruling.
Speakers at the protest emphasized that existing laws in Pakistan set the minimum marriage age at 18, and called for strict implementation of these laws to protect young girls from exploitation and coercion.
The community also expressed concern over certain judicial remarks, stating that such interpretations contradict their religious beliefs and values.
Protestors reaffirmed their commitment to continue peaceful demonstrations until their demands are heard and addressed. They stressed the importance of safeguarding the rights and dignity of young girls across the country.
“Our struggle is for the protection of our daughters and the future of our society,” said one of the participants.
The demonstration concluded with a strong message of unity and patriotism, with participants chanting:
“Pakistan Zindabad, Pakistan Paindabad.”
The community urged authorities to take immediate action, review the controversial case, and ensure that justice prevails in accordance with the law.
